What the file looks like:

  • Lines are diarized:

  • You'll see [SPEAKER_XX] at the start of every line, you can replace all tags for a speaker with the person who is talking.

  • The tool sometimes assigns new tags when people do a voice, you can just change those as you go.

  • Lines are timed:
    Each line is already timed. You might need to fix the timing if the line is:

  • Too long, thus chopping it down; or,

  • Mistimed, meaning you'll have to put the line where it's supposed to go.

Styling:

  • If they are doing a voice, put it in parenthesis at the start of the sentence

  • Eg:
    Jacob: (tough voice) Hell yeah brother!

  • Captioning sounds that happen is not necessary unless it's related to something they are saying

  • Eg:
    [loud motorcicle] -Jacob: Would you shut up?

  • When a speaker cuts off their sentence, indicate it by using an em dash

  • Eg: Jacob: I don't under– I don't know what's happening.

  • Names of things should be in quotation marks or italicized, though more obvious ones I just leave as is.

  • For example, a beer brand I would italicize, but Nintendo can be written normally.

  • Although it's not standard practice, I differentiate the way a sentence is said from an action being performed by the use of square brackets.

  • Eg:
    Julia: (quietly) What the hell? Vs Julia: [grunt]

  • This also can be skipped if it's not related to the dialogue being said. Ideally we would caption everything, but for the sake of simplicity, we have to skip some of them. Though if you are feeling adventurous I won't stop you.

  • Each line should have a fully-opaque black background.

  • If you feel confident in doing so, Jacob and Julia's subtitle lines should be color-coded,

    • #A0FF93 - rgb(160, 255, 147) for Jacob
    • #71BAFF - rgb(113, 186, 255) for Julia
    • #FFE386 - rgb(255, 227, 134) for both

Advice:

  • In-game dialogue that they read doesn't need subtitling, you can delete those lines if they come up. Same with voiced game dialogue. The exception to this would be if the game doesn't already have subtitles.
  • Don't bother double checking subscriber names. Jacob reads those and it's part of the transcription but it's simply not worth spell-checking all of them. Just split lines or re-time if necessary, otherwise leave it as is.
  • I would recommend using a program like Aegisub or Subtitle Edit, both are free, and made specifically for subtitling. You can technically use a word processor for it but it would make timing lines more difficult.
  • I'm not expecting any kind of quick turnaround, please work on these at a pace that's comfortable to you. NO RUSHING.
  • If at any point you feel like you can't continue working on your file, just email me back whatever your progress is and I can either assign it to someone else or finish it on my own. I won't pressure anyone to complete anything, if it's not fun for you anymore, or other things stop you from having the extra time, you can stop working on it.

How to get a file:

If all of this sounds like something you would like to take part in, check the list of pending videos at on this spreadsheet , then send me an email at subtitles@secretsleepoversociety.com telling me which video you'd like to work on, if you include the video number (shown on the far left side of the sheet) it would help me find it easier.

Once you are done with the file, send it back to me to the same email, ideally in the same thread but don't worry too much about it. Also, please include a name or username you'd like me to use to credit you for your work once the file gets published.

Since I started this project it's been a little difficult to keep up with subtitling new videos and checking what viewers have sent me. I already have quite a few files to go over but don't hesitate to contact me anyways if you are interested. I'm sorry to the people who've already sent me things back and they haven't been published yet, but worry not, they will be.
